​Our Vision for Maths at St Thomas

At St Thomas, we believe every child can be a mathematician. We aim to develop confident learners who enjoy mathematics, think logically and can apply their knowledge to solve problems in everyday life. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, children develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills that prepare them for future learning and life beyond school.

At St Thomas, we believe Mathematics is an essential life skill. Through Maths, children develop confidence with number, calculation and problem-solving while learning to think critically, reason mathematically and apply their learning in a range of contexts. We want every child to enjoy Maths and achieve their full potential.

How Maths is Taught

​

Mathematics is taught across all year groups and builds progressively so children develop secure knowledge and understanding as they move through school.

We follow the White Rose Maths scheme alongside the National Curriculum to ensure clear progression and consistent approaches to learning. 

Children experience a range of activities, including:

• Number and calculation

• Reasoning and problem-solving

• Fractions, geometry and measurement

• Statistics and data handling

• Practical and real-life mathematical investigations

Across school:

EYFS: Developing early number sense through practical exploration, play and investigation.

KS1: Building strong foundations in number, place value and calculation. 

KS2: Developing fluency, reasoning and problem-solving across all areas of mathematics.

We believe every child can succeed in Maths.

• Learning is adapted so all children can access the curriculum.

• Children are supported to develop historical knowledge and enquiry skills.

• High expectations are maintained for all learners.

We enjoy sharing children's mathematical learning across the school through:

Children are encouraged to explain their thinking, take risks and develop confidence in their mathematical abilities.

By the time children leave St Thomas, they:

• Apply mathematics to solve problems

• Show resilience and confidence when tackling challenges

We encourage families to support Maths at home through counting, games, puzzles, cooking, shopping and everyday problem-solving activities.
