Free School Meals during the COVID-19 closure

  • week commencing 23 March 2020 - we provided a packed lunch collection service in association with Kirklees Catering
  • week commencing 30 March 2020 - the government announced the introduction of a National Free School Meals Voucher Scheme, we received details of the scheme on Wednesday 1 April and asked parents to confirm their details via the registration form below by Friday 3 April, our order was placed on Monday 6 April, however due to high demand and initial technical problems it took over a week for the order to be processed and eCodes were not emailed to parents until 14 April.
  • Easter Holidays - although free school meal provision is usually term-time only, Kirklees announced that they were funding supermarket vouchers to support children entitled to benefits related free school meals during the two week Easter holiday. Asda vouchers to the value of £30 per eligible child were emailed to parents on Friday 3 April, we understand that some parents would have preferred a different supermarket but we were only given details of this scheme the day before we broke up and due to the extremely short timeframe we had to work with it was impossible to ascertain individual preferences so we had to decide which store would work best for the majority of parents.
  • from 20 April to 22 May 2020 inclusive - vouchers to the value of £15 per child per week were provided to the parents of children entitled to benefits related free school meals from the National Free School Meal Voucher Scheme, under this scheme weekly eCodes are sent by email which can be exchanged for eVouchers for participating supermarkets.
  • Spring Bank Half Term - although free school meal provision is usually term-time only, Kirklees once again funded supermarket vouchers to support children entitled to benefits related free school meals during the half term holiday. Asda vouchers to the value of £15 per eligible child were emailed to parents on Friday 22 May.

National Free School Meals Voucher Scheme

introduced week commencing 30 March 2020

During these challenging times, many families have been concerned about how they will receive the financial support they need to feed their children at home without the free school meal entitlement during the partial closure of schools.

To help deliver this support, the Department for Education (DfE) are working with Edenred UK to deliver supermarket vouchers to those families whose children are entitled to benefits related free school meals.
