The aims of teaching Art and DT in our school are to develop pupils who have skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, design and making. Pupils who produce creative work, exploring, recording and reflecting upon their own experiences of a rich and diverse curriculum. Pupils who have the knowledge and understanding of different artists, craft makers and architects. Pupils who develop lifelong skills, and a love of learning.
Early Years - Children focus on exploring a variety of materials, tools and techniques. They experiment with colour, design, texture, form and function throughout the provision.
Key Stage 1 – Children use a range of materials creatively when designing and making. Lessons focus on the use of colour, pattern, texture, line, shape and form. Concepts and techniques are introduced through the study of local craftsmen.
Key Stage 2 – Children develop techniques, control and the use of materials with awareness for different kinds of art, craft and design. Work is recorded in sketchbooks. Children are engrossed in the works of many great artists, architects and designers throughout history.
Through Art and DT the children will learn a range of skills, concepts, attitudes, techniques and methods of working. The curriculum provides rigorous exploration, dedicated sessions and schools trips to explore artists, pieces of art, ideas and skills. Children are encouraged to think about the purpose of their work and the connection with the viewer. Throughout the year groups children are encouraged to review and analyse their creative works and those of their peers.
Early Years – children are given the opportunity to design, create and review their work within the provision. Outdoor learning provides the opportunity to work on a large scale, within groups and use extended resources. The indoor provision develops imagination and creativity in many forms.
Key Stage 1 – children are encouraged to explore visual, tactile and sensory materials and processes to develop their understanding of art and design. They are given the opportunity to focus on the work of artists and designs by asking and answering questions such as: “What is it like?” “What is it going to be used for?” “What do other think about it?”.
Key Stage 2 – children develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of materials and process by developing their creativity and imagination. They are encouraged to use their own experiences and ideas to devolve an understanding towards the work of others and their own creative pieces.
We encourage all children to take responsibility for their own learning. A range of assessment for learning strategies are used to assess knowledge, understanding and creative skills. We measure the impact of learning through observations within sessions, work produced in sketchbooks and proudly on display around school. Feedback is provided by peers and teachers alongside the use of self-assessment in order for children to become creative and critical thinkers. Planning incorporates formal elements and skill progression in the following four areas: generating ideas, making, knowledge and evaluation. The curriculum aims to provide children with the skills and attributes to become lifelong learners, to develop a love of art and design and introduce them to a range of different future career paths.
