Maths Overview for Year 1

These are the areas of Maths that Year 1 will be focusing on this year.

We will be using the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach.

In Focused Provision we provide children the opportunity to consolidate

what they have learned.

Maths

Weekly Homework

Every two weeks your teacher will set you homework tasks on the Top Marks website.

The links will be sent to you via Parents2Teacher email and will link to the work we have been

doing in class.

You will always have an activity which you should be familiar

with and one which will stretch you more!

Remote Learning

If you are at home for a longer period of time, waiting for a test result or staying safe in quarantine, you will find your weekly learning here. You will need to complete a maths activity each day.

In school, we follow the White Rose scheme of Learning, so our first unit for maths this half-term is Place Value.

There are some short  video lessons that will help you see what we are doing in class.

Your teacher will add Top Marks activities to match the work being completed in class. Do this each day to make sure you keep up with the work being completed in school.

Reading

Weekly Homework

You can read to yourself, read to a family member or listen to someone else read, but try to read every day.

The digital reading library is available on Oxford Owls and your teacher will send you a list of 3 books to read online that are at the right reading level for your child.  Please refer to your login details.

If you prefer traditional books you will be given a book each Monday, please return it on a Friday.

Remote Learning

If you are at home for longer period of time, waiting for a test result or staying safe in quarantine, you will find your weekly learning here. You will need to complete a reading activity each day.

Writing

Weekly Homework

We are learning to write the tricky words - I, no, you, to, the, into, and, he, me, she, we, be, my, you, was.

This website has some fun games to play too- https://www.topmarks.co.uk, scroll to English activities and the 5-7 year old activities are suitable for Year 1.

Why not try keeping a diary of your  day? You could add pictures, drawings and write down what you've been doing and feeling.

Remote Learning

If you are at home for longer period of time, waiting for a test result or staying safe in quarantine, you will find your weekly learning here. You will need to complete a writing activity each day.

You can write the beginning, middle and end of the story. Make a puppet of the Gingerbread Man and some of the other characters. Make a Wanted Poster of the fox to warn people to stay away from him. What does he look like, what characteristics does he have.

Ask your parent to check their emails.

You can share your work on the Seesaw app and you have already had your login details.

Our Topic and other learning

TOPIC HOMEWORK

Our topic this half-term is The Great Fire of London. In this topic we find out about The Great Fire of London - when was it? why did it spread so quickly?

Questions we will ask in class - What can I see from my window? Who am I ? Who is in my family? Am I healthy? What do I look like? Do I change?

At home you could:

  • Find out about the story of The Great Fire of London. What was London like then?
  • Draw a picture of the buildings on fire.
  • What kind of things were made in the bakery at Pudding Lane?
  • Make a model of a 1666 house using different materials.
  • Try making some bread - take pictures and put them on Seesaw.
